Indeed, every years, the Boxster always contributes to Porsche, but it remains an engineers car, with a correct formula of mid-engine, roadster design, and a compact body, the Boxster really have its own prestige. Besides currently the Boxster not becoming Porsche backbone anymore, as it has been replaced by Cayenne and Macan.

After 3 generation, its time for Porsche Boxster to prove that its worthy to be driven by the enthusiasts who are curious of a value of a Porsche. Still base on the 981 chassis, Porsche decide to add the 718 monikers in front of the Boxster to revive the legendary Porsche 718, a flat-4 racing car developed from Porsche 500 basis.

As the car now apply a flat 4 engine compared to the flat 6 engine, surely its a justification for Porsche to put the badge and to changes the engine, as this downsizing method are not without any historical reasons. As FYI, Porsche fans is one of the most stubborn fans in the world.

You really need a hawk eye to differentiate the Porsche 718 Boxster compared to teh previous version. As the changes lies on the new 4 point LED DRL at the headlights, which is similar as the one fitted in the Porsche 918 Spyder as one of the member of The Holy trinity.

Toy around with side indicator or hazard, then the LED DRL will transform into side lamp, as the LED Headlights equipped with adaptive function to light the way according to the steering wheel direction. While the 20 inches wheels could be exchanged with an optional Y-Spoke wheels of course with additional .

Looking from any sides, the car are not that big, its quite compact, so no worries when parking the car.

The air intake on both of the side is the path for the air to enter the engine, so the 350 hp produced by the engine remains optimum. As the version we’ve try is the Porsche 718  Boxster S, that is the output reaching those level.

From the first appearance, the Porsche Boxster always apply canvas roof, including the new 718 Boxster, as the roof could be opened during the car driven, with a max speed of 50 km/h. The process are quite fast, only 14 seconds, with a silent motor and could be done through the car remote.

The rear section are the best part of this car, it looks awesome, despite its bigger brother, the 911 are more iconic, but again, the attention to detail are excellent.

The tail light decorated with a LED bar, while the tail lamp connected with a black accent along with a 3D ‘Porsche’ writings and a rear spoiler.

The rear spoiler will be active if the 718 Boxster reaching a certain speed to improve the downforce, as you could activate it through the sport chrono settings.

Thanks to the Sport Chrono package, it equipped with a twin exhaust who could improved the sound of the exhaust.

With a Sport Chrono package, we could get a flaps (Valve) to change the car sound. In a normal mode, the valve will close and the sound are more calm, and make the car more discreet.

When you activate the sport mode, or sport plus, the valve will opened and the sound become louder, which is very fun to enjoyed during driving in highways.

The interior of the new Porsche 718 Boxster are quite similar like other Porsche, with a correct spot-on position, as it really offers the fun of driving.

On the steering wheel at the right lower side, you could find the dial knob to choose the mode, between Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual, along with the SPort Response button on the middle.

Similar as the Porsche 911, the car give an instant responds for 20 seconds if you press the button. The button available if you buy the Sports Chrono package along with the analog watch in the middle of the dashboard.

Not only as the time piece, the analog watch functioned as a lap timer when you drive the car in a circuit. While on the new 718 Boxster S, the huge circle in the middle is a tachometer, then speedometer on the left, and LCD screen at the right.

The screen could display the driving mode, engine temp, fuel status, mileage, roof folding indicator, launch control, and a lot more.

If you want to play the manual mode of the PDK, there are two choices, using a paddleshift at the steering wheel, or using the tiptronic at the transmission lever. near the PDK lever, the dual zone Digital AC and auto climate control sits nicely.

While the new infotainment system now support touch screen operation with multi touch supports, just like smart phones.

For iPhone users, you could use Apple CarPlay who are become standard feats in this car, just connect the cable to your iPhone and enjoy the Apple CarPlay features. Besides that, other facilities, like navigation who are supported by Google Street able to display which the convenient routes.

The audio quality? of course top notch, as you could play your song collection from the USB or Bluetooth connectivity.

Looking near the PDK lever, a buttons to open and close the roof, along with the PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management), PSM (Porsche Stability Management), button for the rear spoiler, and electric parking brake.

For the passenger, a decent glove box, along with an adjustable cup holder pop-out from the dashboard are available, too bad the center console box are quite small.

Behind both of the seats, there is a small hook to hang your clothes, if you need to bring your clothes.

As for average us Indonesian peoples, there is no problem with the cabin, as you will felt its cramped if you have a really huge body. So do with the boot, as with 150 liter of capacity, its quite decent to bring a backpack or groceries, and in here we could see the slots to filled up the car fluids, such as radiator and Oil. porsche-718-boxster-s-trunk

But if you need more storage, you could use the front trunk, or Frunk, with a functional 125 liters of capacity, as you could open the front and the rear trunk with ease through two buttons at the lower right side of the driver.

The engine on the new 718 Boxster S apply a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder Boxser Turbo producing 350 hp and 420 Nm of torque. Those amount of power and torque distributed to the rear wheels through a 7-speed PDK, as to stop the car, 4 disc brakes on all wheels ready to do the job, and if you need more stopping power, a Carbon Ceramic option are ready too.

A lot of other Porsche component fitted in the new Porsche 718 Boxster, as besides the Porsche 911 turbo brakes, the EPS steering rack also taken from the 911 Turbo, while the variable turbo also taken from the 911. While the rear axle are taken from the Porsche Cayman GT4.

But again, those are only figures on paper, as what we need to do is turn on the engine and drive it. As you need to put those good looking mini Porsche key to the slot on the dashboard and turn it to turn on the engine, no Push start stop buttons like fitted in Porsche siblings at VW.

But one thing bother me when the engine on, as the sound produced by the flat 4 2.5 liter turbo engine are not like the flat 6 Porsche Boxster 986 or 987. As you press the pedal more, the sound are really different from a Boxster we use to know, I didn’t say its bad, its just different.

But again, let’s drive it, as I think driving the Boxster in the middle of Jakarta traffic wouldn’t be so difficult.

As the car are compact, you could judge the car dimension easily, especially at the front. Looking through the side mirror, you still see a decent view, but not much if using the center inside mirror.

The PDK transmission are smooth and cooperative to be used in heavy traffic, no judder symptom like other dual clutch transmission, how about the turbo lag?

Its easier to find a needle in the haystack than feeling the turbo lag, the responds are quite natural, and instant like a normally aspirated car, and thanks to a 420 Nm of torque, accelerating from stand still its a breeze, as the torque available starting 2,000 rpm.

When accelerating from a stand still, the launch control and the Sport Plus mode will aid you to reach 0-100 km/h of acceleration in less than 4.5 seconds.

Those figures means the new Porsche 718 Boxster are faster than a BMW Z4, Jaguar F-Type V6 Supercharger or even Ford Mustang Ecoboost. The torque and boost are felt up to the redline of 8,000 rpm, as the redline as not high as the previous Boxster.

In the D mode, the gear shifting are very fast, plus its quite smart, as it could skip the gear from 5 to 2 during a quick kickdown. So do vice-verse, as it could skip from the 3rd gear to 6th or 7th if we are in a cruising condition, and reaching a top speed of 280 km/h.

Suspensions? thanks to the PASM, the suspension could be set as you wish. For daily usage, it is recommended to set to Normal, as the damping will be softer. If you find a good road condition, where you could sprint the car, just change the mode to Sport or Sport Plus who will stiffen the suspensions and reduce the body roll.

For soundproofing, the noise are still heard, due to its canvas roof, and the standard auto start stop are not too smooth in bringing back the engine from the Off condition. Plus if you want to stop the car for a longer time, just press the brake pedal deeper to activate the Brake Hold feature.

We do love the EPS, besides again, its an EPS, but Porsche manage to tuned it to have a good weight, and nice feedback from the road. Cornering with this car are exhilarating, as just point the steering wheel to the direction you wanted, the car will react even faster than you are directing, its like a physic car.

Thanks to a low center of gravity Boxer engine, along with the mid-engine configuration to create a perfect weight distribution, the Porsche 718 Boxster really offers a top handling on its segment, as it could eat corners with such poise and agility, like a Go-Kart.

But as you press the throttle more, the sound felt more different, as its not the distinctive Porsche sound character, especially from the 911, Cayman and old Boxster, but this flat-4 have a different sound characteristic.

Surely, the engine sound are becoming the identity of a certain sports car model, and with the sound changing, I do feel a slight loss of the Boxster characteristic, as again, its not a bad engine sound, it’s just….different! 718-porsche-boxster-rear-view-indonesia

Surely for Porsche hardcore fans, they will complains regarding the sound changes, but for you who just know the Porsche, or just even don’t care about its history and characteristic, the 718 Boxster still a good car to be driven, not to mention it manage to set a good FC of 13 km/liter in the MID after our full day trip going through Jakarta and Serpong heavy traffic, and some acceleration and high speed driving.

Surely I am sure that in every measurable aspects, the new Porsche 718 Boxster S are far much better and improved compared to the previous version. The design become more distinctive, the features are more complete, the interior are getting more neat, plus a faster and more efficient engine. While the handling itself could be considered as one of the best in its segment.

But again, for you Porsche hardcore fans, you shouldn’t be too gloomy, as Porsche just promised to bring back the flat-6 3.8 liter Naturally Aspirated engine from the old Porsche 911 Carrera with an output reaching 400 hp in the high performance version of the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, which is the 718 Cayman GT4, and 718 Boxster Spyder, as before that they will release the GTS version with a tuned 2.5 liter flat-4 turbo that produce more output.
